Just in, Hardy Alpha 5

A little while ago, the new Ubuntu 8.04, hardy heron, announced the alpha 5. It’s amazing that there are only three more releases until final including: alpha 6, beta, release candidate and then finally, the new hardy. 🙂

It retains pretty much from the fourth alpha, like the new applications; brasero, transmission, vinaigre, clock + weather applet, GVFS and system monitor.

It has close to minimal new features. There were a few fixed bugs, and that’s about it. If you want to, go ahead and try it. Unfortunately, not much to write about here. I can tell you it comes with firefox 3, beta 3, which I blogged about earlier.

For Virtual things, KVM is now “officially” supported in the Ubuntu kernel. Libvirt and virt-manager have now also been added to Ubuntu. They allow for easy guest creation and simple management out of scratch. Virt-manager can remotely administer guests on a remote server, which is pretty cool, but I don’t have a server 😛 .

These tools also function with XEN, even though it is not officially maintained. The kernel also includes virtio modifications which should greatly improve general guest access.

the new firewall software, ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) is designed to make administering a firewall easier for (end)users and not getting in the path of the network administrators. At the moment, it’s a command line tool, so it might not be welcomed so warmly by the new users.

The new Ubuntu CD menu is cleaned up and more simple. It allows you to reboot into liveCd mode, install wubi and has a link to the Ubuntu website. Sadly, I think it’s lost the feature where you can install the windows variants of linux software.

Wubi has gotten a slight bit of the update. Wubi provides options to install Ubuntu as an application and basically there is no need for partitioning. You just boot and select Ubuntu or Windows. Good for people who want to immerse themselves more than just a liveCD. Just set the provided options then go. It can be removed as a normal application via Add/ Remove Applications in the Control Panel (Amazing how I remember this… 😆 ).

Well, just my little bit of update for you there,

  1. Downloaded it, and it’s beautiful! I love the Heron wallpaper! Unfortunately it hates my old laptop 😦 I couldn’t get it to boot the CD at all. I hope that gets fixed before release.

  2. I love the wallpaper. Hopefully it works for you!

PS: Everyone, just back from cleaning out my categories… I will clean up my posts at a later time whenever it allows. Can’t wait ’till alpha 6!

  3. Actually never assume that just because it boots on one machine that its integrity it OK. That’s why it wouldn’t boot on my laptop. Bad burn. 😯

  4. Haha, I never assumed that. 😛
